St Irven farmhouse

The proposed extension to St Irven farmhouse seeks to enhance the dwelling’s functionality and spatial quality while respecting the character of the existing building and its surrounding context. The design concept revolves around creating a harmonious balance between the traditional vernacular architecture of the farmhouse and contemporary living requirements.

Existing property in current state.

A double-storey side extension is proposed, forming a sympathetic addition to the property. Our client’s set out the brief to design additional bedrooms for the growing family and more functional living spaces which the existing small dwelling was not providing.

The extension will be clad in a combination of modern materials, such as zinc and timber. Large expanses of glazing will be incorporated into the front elevation, flooding the interior with natural light and establishing a strong visual connection to the garden. This interplay of solid and void creates a dynamic and inviting façade.

Internally, the extension will provide a spacious open-plan living area, seamlessly integrating with the existing kitchen on the first floor. This configuration will create a flexible and multifunctional space, ideal for modern living. The ceiling height was carefully designed to maintain the intimate scale of the original cottage, while incorporating contemporary lighting design to enhance the ambiance of the space with a vaulted ceiling.

Our 3D Visualisation for the side extension.

Particular attention will be paid to thermal performance and energy efficiency. The extension will be constructed using high-performance insulation materials and incorporating energy-efficient glazing to minimize heat loss. Sustainable features, such as underfloor heating and rainwater harvesting, may also be considered to reduce the environmental impact of the development.

The proposed extension is designed to respect the character of the existing and its surrounding environment. By carefully considering the materials, scale, and proportion of the new addition, the design aims to create a harmonious and visually pleasing composition that enhances the overall architectural quality of the property.
